History:
During the 18th century, much of present day Clark was part of the “West Fields” of Elizabethtown. An early settler, Dr. William Robinson, bought 700 acres in 1686 and built a house, which is now the oldest building in Clark. The town was named for Abraham Clark, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Prior to 1940 and until the advent of the Garden State Parkway with its formal opening in 1954, Clark was a rural town. Since that time the “Policy of Planned and Controlled Growth” guided its development into a vibrant, suburban, residential town with thriving commercial and business ventures and a modern industrial complex.

The primary feature of Clark’s built environment today is the 20th century tract housing. They are on quiet streets, well kept, with nicely landscaped lawns. The owners of many old houses rushed to “modernize” their homes when the new homes were built. Some houses have been restored, but the majority of the historic buildings wear the siding of the 20th century.

Clark is a family oriented community revolving around activities of civic, social and school organizations, proud of its spirit of volunteerism
